Maine To Reconsider Online Casino Gambling Bill For Tribal Casinos In 2024

The state of Maine is looking to reconsider LD 1777, an online casino gambling bill that would allow tribal casinos to offer their services online. If passed, the bill would enable Tribal casinos to obtain a four-year license for $200k, payable to the Maine Gambling Control Unit.

Representative Laura Supica first filed the new online gambling proposal and offered tribal casinos exclusive online casino privileges. However, the bill will not allow tribal casinos to transfer their license to any other business entity.

LD 1777 also states that 40% of revenue will go to the E-9-1-1 fund while 20% will go to the Opioid Use Disorder Prevention and Treatment Fund. The Portland Press has reported that Governor Janet Mills would be against any gambling expansion bill in the state, but she did sign sports betting into law in 2022.

Are Online Casinos Currently Legal In Maine?

Tribal casinos are not allowed to offer their services online, but offshore casinos currently accept players from Maine. State gambling laws do not outlaw online gambling but do restrict what tribal casinos can offer.

There are currently a bunch of 18+ online betting states since current state and federal laws do not outlaw offshore casinos from operating in their state. In addition to online casino gambling, USA players can also bet on sports or bet on poker with offshore gambling sites.

Will Maine Pass An Online Casino Bill In 2024?

We can’t predict the future, but with current legislation, it seems likely to pass in the near future. Governor Mills is opposed to gambling expansion but was quick to pen a domestic sports betting bill, so only time will tell. Until more domestic options are available to Maine residents, online casinos from outside the state will still be the only option for many bettors.
