Teams That Are Locked Into The CFP No Matter What

  • The Oregon Ducks – Win or lose, the Ducks will make it into the CFP. A win against Penn State will secure the number one seed and a bye week. A loss will likely result in them being the fifth seed.
  • The Texas Longhorns – With a win against the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas will become the second seed or the first overall qualifier if Oregon loses. A loss will drop them behind Georgia, but they’ll remain ahead of SEC programs like Alabama and, most likely, Tennessee.
  • The Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Notre Dame does not belong to a conference and is not subject to a championship game. A positive aspect of that situation is that there’s no potential for them to lose a game and miss the playoffs. The negative is ND cannot secure a top-four seed, even if they finish at the top the CFP rankings at the end of the regular season.
  • The Indiana Hoosiers – The Hoosiers finished with one loss and didn’t make it to the Big Ten Championship Game because they are ranked lower than Penn State. As a 1-loss Big Ten team, they are a lock for the CFP.

Teams That Need A Win To Get In

  • The Boise State Broncos – BSU is assured of a top-four seed if they beat UNLV and become the Mountain West champions. A loss will likely place them behind an outlying team like the Miami Hurricanes.
  • The ACC Champion – This game is a win-or-go-home scenario, as there is no room in the 12-team bracket for the loser of this Clemson vs. SMU matchup.
  • The Big 12 Champion – Whoever loses between Arizona State and Iowa State will have no shot at making it into the playoffs.

Teams That Can Get In With Some Help

  • The Miami Hurricanes – The U were the ACC frontrunners for the entire season until a loss last weekend removed them from the conference championship game. They are currently ranked 12th, and will probably need Boise State to lose in order to get in.
  • The Army Black Knights – Army will need to beat Tulane and win the AAC Championship, and will also need Boise State to lose and fall behind them in the rankings. Army would finish with one loss to Notre Dame if they beat the Green Wave, whereas BSU would have a loss to Oregon and UNLV in this scenario.
